Adelaide Produce Maket wholesalers sell $700 million

Adelaide Produce Market in the early morningMore than $700 million worth of produce will be sold at the Adelaide Produce Market this year according to AdelaideNow. The Adelaide Produce Market has been located at Pooraka since 1988.

Adelaide Produce Market Marketing and Business Development Manager, Julian Carbone says wholesale markets are vital to ensuring a diverse food industry.

“If we didn’t have a wholesale market, most growers and most retailers wouldn’t be able to buy and sell efficiently and we would all be totally reliant on very large retailers sourcing produce directly from very large growers,” Mr Carbone says.

“It is probably because we are so stable and just going about our business quietly but not only are we are a key employer across the state; we provide the essential role of feeding people.”

Joe Libresti, owner of Tropicana greengrocers at Tea Tree Plaza and Mawson Lakes has sold fruit since he was 16 and says demand for fresh produce because of the popularity of cooking shows is helping smaller retailers like him.
