Giant drones will be housed at Edinburgh and will deliver a $100 million boost to Defence.

Tritons Drone-UAV-Edinburgh Parks-Defence-DSTOPrime Minister Tony Abbott has announced that the Government will buy Triton Unmanned Aerial Vehicles to patrol the nation’s borders.

UAVs are commonly known as drones but the Tritons are smarter than other unmanned craft, with sophisticated surveillance capabilities.

The overall cost of the project has been estimated at anywhere from $1 billion to $3 billion.

As well as about $100 million for facilities and infrastructure in SA, the Tritons should bring in another $20 million a year for the businesses supporting the base, the Government says.

The Defence Teaming Centre estimates the project would create about 100 jobs. This investment builds on the ongoing investements in surveillance aircraft.
